The Harland & Voss community programme

At Harland & Voss, we believe that business has a vital role to play in supporting the communities it serves.

We want to make community involvement an integral part of the way we do our business. We aim to do this not just by making donations, but by other appropriate methods tailored to the needs of the organisations with which we work.

Currently, we support three areas of community and charitable activity.

+ Womens’  health, education and wellbeing

These are areas that have traditionally been under-supported by other sources of funding. Whilst this is starting to change, we know that there are several small-scale London-based organisations where even small amounts of financial support could make a real difference. We are delighted to be able to assist groups that provide a direct service to London’s women to promote their health, education, and wellbeing.

+ London’s built heritage

London has its monuments; but less widely known are the small-scale local treasures being put to good use for the local community. Harland & Voss is committed to supporting this unique built heritage. Buildings of historical or architectural interest have a vital role to play in promoting community activities and contributing to the diversity of our built environment.

+ Community groups

From civic associations which make our city a more pleasant place in which to live, to social groups which reduce isolation, and all things in between, London's community groups play many roles in the life of the areas we serve. We never cease to be amazed at the variety of London’s local groups, and are delighted to support them in any way we can.

The Women’s Library, Aldgate

Our second International Women’s Day Donation was awarded to the Friends of the Women’s Library. This Library, based at London Metropolitan University, holds Designated Status as a collection of outstanding national importance. It is a fascinating archive of British women’s lives over the past 400 years. The Friends offer their support by raising funds to improve its collections, and by providing volunteers to conduct library tours, catalogue new acquisitions and conserve damaged materials. Unusually for a university-run archive, the Women’s Library Reading Room is open, free of charge, to all members of the public. Further details are available on its website: www.thewomenslibrary.ac.uk

Islington Women’s Aid

The recipient of our first International Women's Day Donation, Islington Women’s Aid helps around 900 women and children across London each year. The organisation maintains two refuges in the borough of Islington and offers a range of community based services to women and children affected by domestic violence. It also helps women to find and furnish new accommodation where they can begin to rebuild their lives. Islington Women’s Aid can be contacted on 020 8269 2121, 10am-4pm Monday to Friday.

Save the Baby, St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington

This charity, which was a beneficiary of our first “Share the Summer” scheme, funds research into infertility, miscarriage and late pregnancy complications. It backs new projects which are too small to attract public sources of medical funding, but which have the potential to be developed into larger-scale programmes at a later stage. Its work is led by Professor Lesley Regan, an acknowledged expert on miscarriage, and author of the book “Miscarriage: What Every Woman Needs to Know”. Her clinics offer expert help to women living in West and Central London, and from all over the country. You can find out more about the work of Save the Baby at their website: www.save-the-baby.com

The Royal Hospital, Chelsea

This seventeenth-century treasure designed by Christopher Wren is home to the world-famous Chelsea Pensioners. However, its historic Long Wards needed interior modernisation to bring them up to 21st century standards. The Hospital launched a £35m appeal to refurbish the Long Wards and construct a state of the art infirmary in harmony with the original buildings. Harland & Voss supported this appeal as a result of our third “Share the Summer” programme, where we asked our customers and website visitors to nominate a worthy beneficiary.

Chiswick House

If you haven’t yet visited this eighteenth century Palladian Villa and its expansive landscaped gardens in Burlington Lane W4, we would certainly recommend that you become acquainted with this local landmark. Described by Sir Kenneth Clark in ‘Civilisation’ as “a masterpiece of domestic architecture”, a £12.1m lottery-funded regeneration project is currently underway to restore the gardens to their former glory. Harland & Voss is proud to be a member of Chiswick House Friends, a charity set up to restore, conserve, enhance and protect the magnificent house and gardens.

The Roundhouse, Chalk Farm

The Roundhouse is a historic steam engine repair building that became a legendary venue in the 1960s and 70s. This is where punk and glam rock started, where The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd made their names and The Doors played their only UK gig. It closed in 1983 and lay quiet for 15 years. We were delighted to help the Roundhouse Trust raise £28 million to restore this legendary performing space and establish a Creative Centre for young Londoners with little or no access to arts education, by making a donation from our first “Share the Summer” programme.

A simple and effective way to help small community groups is to support them by advertising in their publications and on their websites. Since we opened for business we have contributed over £6,000 to local groups through advertising. The groups we supported included: Hampstead Garden Suburb Residents’ Association, The Proms at St Jude’s, Hampstead Womens’ Club, St John’s Wood Womens’ Club, and Kensington and Chelsea Womens’ Club.

The Hampstead and Highgate Festival

Part showcase for local community talent, part platform for rising and established international classical music stars, the Hampstead and Highgate Festival occupies a unique niche in London’s cultural life. Harland & Voss began its association with the Festival in 2007, and we hope to support this eclectic event for many years to come.

The Mulberry Centre, Isleworth

The Mulberry Centre provides a free drop-in support and information centre for people affected by cancer, including patients, carers and those bereaved. It provides a library, information officer, counselling, complementary therapies, support groups, relaxation groups and welfare rights and money advice. The charity sees people from any area with no age or postcode boundaries and can be contacted at www.themulberrycentre.co.uk. We were delighted to support them with electrical work at charity rates as part of our second “Share the Summer” programme.
