Our professional standards

Harland & Voss is proud to be a member of The National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC). This is the industry's independent non profit-making regulatory body covering the whole of the United Kingdom. Its purpose is to protect consumers from unsafe and unsound electrical work. You're probably familiar with its distinctive logo, which is featured on several electricians' advertisements and vans.

Organisations or individuals can be approved by the NICEIC in two different ways. The first, and most respected designation, is that of Approved Contractor, which Harland & Voss gained within its first year of operation.

As Approved Contractors, Harland & Voss can self-certificate the standards of its work under current building control regulations. In order to gain this status, we had to satisfy no fewer than 28 criteria ranging from the qualifications and experience our people have, to the way we run our business and the quality of our installations. As part of the accreditation process we had to show five examples of our major electrical works, which an NICEIC inspector checked for standards of workmanship and safety. And we'll have to go through the same rigorous procedure again once a year every year in order to keep our status. No wonder the NICEIC has the reputation of running the most stringent regulatory regime for electricians in this country.

We also qualify automatically for the NICEIC's Domestic Installer scheme. This is a less demanding designation, and a minimum required for businesses to carry out electrical work in your home. It is primarily meant for companies like kitchen fitters or gas installers who do minor electrical work as part of their main trade. However, some electricians will rely on this as well to demonstrate that they are competent.

Harland & Voss is delighted to be one of only a handful of London electricians who are members of the Guild of Master Craftsmen. This is an independent grouping of businesses in craft occupations who undertake to meet the highest standards of service and technical excellence in their day to day work. Again, you’re likely to be familiar with its logo, which is a reassuring symbol of its members’ professionalism and integrity.

In order to join the Guild we underwent a stringent vetting process. Detailed references were sought from some of our customers, and we would like to thank everyone who took the time and trouble to recommend us. The Guild also investigated a number of our business processes including our procedures for resolving customer complaints, and even our level of insurance cover. In addition, the Guild took independently-provided evidence of the good standing of the company’s individual directors. We are delighted to have sailed through the process, and that we have been able to receive verification from a respected independent body that we now rank amongst London’s most reputable electricians.

We are proud to be the only electrician in London to be an accredited Eco-Refurbisher on the Green Register of Construction Professionals. To achieve this status we’ve made a commitment to specialist training in topics such as integrating renewable energy technologies, technical solutions for London house types and the economics of eco-refurbishment. In practical terms, this means keeping abreast of the new technologies – for example in the fields of heating and lighting controls – so that we can recommend the most energy efficient options available without compromising your lifestyle. We won’t preach – but we will be able to tell you what new technologies are on the market, and which ones make best economic sense for you. And we’ll still do the simple things, such as fitting outdoor sockets for your electric car, as well.
